Provo, Utah - Chapter 431

Our Chapter starts all our motorcycle group rides from one of the Utah County Communities including Eagle Mountain, Saratoga Springs, Lehi, Alpine, Highland, American Fork, Pleasant Grove, Lindon, Orem, Provo, Springivlle, Mapleton, Spanish Fork, Woodland Hills, Elk Ridge, Salem, Payson, or Santaquin.

Saftey First:
Information for people who may want to ride with us

We want all riders to feel welcome and BE SAFE so we have prepared some information on us and how our group rides together. We make these documents available at the pre-ride briefing for all riders. (We also have additional specific information about the particular ride we are doing that day such as routes and stops etc.)

Below are the guidelines we urge riders to follow for the safety of everyone in our rides.

Welcome and Information about our Chapter
(This tells you a little about our Chapter and STAR Touring and riding along with contact information.)

Save your life - Group riding guidelines
Riding in a group can be fun and enjoyable, but knowing what others are going to be doing and what they expect of you is a serious matter of safety. If nothing else, study this single sheet.

MSF hand signals and spacing guidelines
The Motorcycle Safety foundation has published standardized hand signals which we use on the ride. Using these signals, the road captain communicates with the other riders in the group about what the group is going to do next (i.e., turn, slow down, pull off etc.) and about dangers that riders should watch out for (i.e. pot hole or debris in the road, a bicycle in our lane, etc. Riders in the group also use the hand signals to communicate with the road captain and tailgunner about a need to stop or get fuel, etc. These hand signals should be understood and crisply passed back to the riders behind you (when safe to do so.)
This sheet also has an illustration about the position and spacing of bikes in our group to help make sure every bike has enough room to be safe and still stays together for good communications. Studying and understanding the illustration at the bottom of this page is VERY important to safe riding.

Additional hand signals we use.
We use five hand signals in addition to the ones from the MSF. You should also be familiar with these had signals (particularly for safe spacing between bikes.)

These sheets contain information gathered from a number of sources, especially the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and STAR Touring plus our own group's riding experience. Remember, ALWAYS "ride your own ride" and keep yourself safe.
-- Byron Harward, Pres. Chapter 431.

NEXT EVENT: Chili Cook-Off & Garage Day Sat Feb. 11 Details Here

Monthly Chapter Ride/Meeting:

2nd Saturday of Every Month:
During the winter (Nov-Mar) Unless there is a special event, we meet for breakfast at 9:00 am. While we eat, we discuss future rides and Chapter plans. We also receive about 20 minutes of "Bonus Information" on motorcycles and/or riding in the form of an outside speaker or demonstration. After breakfast, (if weather allows) a short ride is available for any riders that wish. So, bring your bike if you want to ride, otherwise feel free to come in your car.

During the regular ride season (Apr-Oct) we hold a Chapter Ride. We meet at Escape Motorsports, 1480 N. State St., Provo, UT. - 9:00 am for refreshments and new-rider briefing. - 9:30 am for the Chapter meeting/all-rider pre-ride briefing. - Kickstands up at 10:00 am. These rides will usually be 150 to 250 miles (4-6 hrs including stops.) They are designed to take advantage of Utah's breathtaking scenery and vistas.

Details (or changes) are always posted here:

Next Chapter Meeting:
Chili Cook-Off and Garage Day

Date: Saturday, Feb. 11, 2011
LOCATION: Byron and Terry Ann's house in Santaquin. (Map and directions at Byron's other website:
WestFieldsRanch.com. Any questions? email Byron at byron@star431.com or call him at 465-8765.)
Time:
Chili Cook-Off: 1:30 pm (Pot luck if you don't bring Chili.)
  Garage Day Activies: 11am - 4pm (In Byron's garage - see below)

Double Event, One Location: This is our annual Chili Cook-Off social. This year we decided to see if anyone wanted to ride or trailer their bikes to the party because Byron has a big garage and there is room for a number of bikes to be parked out of any weather while the riders talk and wrench motorcycles. So, both activities will be going on at the same day (overlapping times) and the same place. Read below about the details for both parties.

Chili Cook-Off: This is the annual event. Simple enough. If you want to enter the Chili contest, cook up your best chili and bring it to the party for everyone to eat. There will be blind judges (OK, they can see, but they won't know whose chili they are judging and they won't be contestants) There will be several categories (Best overall, Hottest, Best mild flavor, and so on) with prices and awards. (Blair is setting it all up and we will post more soon.) If you don't want to have your chili judged (from a can, etc.) No problem. If you don't want to bring chili, just bring something pot luck that goes with a chili dinner.

We will plan on digging in at 1:30. If you want your chili judged, have it at the house by 1:15.

Garage Day: Byron has a large garage (the people he bought the house from apparently wanted a barn.) He will have it cleared out so there will be space for 6 or 7 bikes in the garage at the same time. There is lots of parking space for cars and trucks and trailers on his place, so you don't need to worry if you wish to trailer your bike to the party. Please bring the tools, parts, closed container for used oil with you. It may be possible to order oil, oil filters or other parts in advance and have them there. PLEASE call Byron immediately if you want to arrange something like that. Byron does not have a lot of tools and no special tools, so bring what you will need or ASK before you come. We are still working on the details, but please let Byron know if you want to work on something specific either as a "learner" or as a "teacher." It really won't be that formal. Just lots of talking and doing together for those who are interested. The garage space will be available from 11:00 am until it starts to get cold about 4:00 pm

If this idea works, we will try to do this "garage day" in the summer too.

"Crazy Byron" (CB) Rides (off-season rides)

(These rides are only called "Crazy" because they happen when most people have put away their bikes. The rides will still be within the traffic laws and according to STAR standards.)

NEXT CB RIDE:
We are watching the weather for a good-weather window to do a ride.

Here is what we did for our last winter ride:

PAST RIDE REPORT:

DATE: Sat. Dec. 10th
TIME: 12:00 Noon
MEETUP: Escape Motorsports, 1480 N. State St. Provo
Kickstands up: 12:20 pm
ROUTE: This was a low-speed ride (We actually had a Honda Rebel 250 ride with us on this ride. We rode through Provo from Escape (After the stop light by Escape, there were NO stop sighs/lights clear until Geneva Rd.) Then we traveled on rural roads between Utah Lake and I-15 north to Saratoga Springs, right along the shore of Utah Lake west of the old Geneva Steel site for a while and then all the way to Saratoga Springs

We had an even better day than the forecast suggested and everyone was all smiles.

After a warm up break in the McDonalds, some riders headed home and others made a 30 minute loop through Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain before heading home around the back side of Utah Lake. Even the ones who added the extra loops got home by 3:30 pm before the evening started to get cold. This was a PERFECT "Crazy Byron" winter ride. We will look for the next chance to get in another ride and let you know via email, facebook and this site.

"CB" ride Explanation

Our Prez., Byron rides all year round (often looking like a kid in a snow suit!) When the weather in the "off-season" is warm enough that even NORMAL people might enjoy a ride, Byron will organize a an easy ride on short notice and send out the word via email and TEXT MESSAGE.

For email notice, sign up for the newsletter with "subscribe" in the subject line by clicking here. For TEXT MESSAGE notice of these rides (or cancelations) text your request to byron at 465-8765 (area code: 801) Be sure you include your NAME as well as your CELL PHONE Number and your EMAIL ADDRESS.

Dinner Rides:

These are summer evening rides. They are scheduled after 6:00 pm on a week day evening. They start at different places in Utah County and explore the roads in and around the valley or in nearby canyons or deserts. We want these rides to be great rides for new riders who want to try group riding but don't want to commit to the longer rides yet. We will end a "Dinner Ride" before dark at a restaurant or ice cream parlor, etc. for a little socializing.

NEXT DINNER RIDE:
Dinner Rides will resume in April 2012
